Getting Started

A mother and two children setting up a small bookshelf and table in a sunny room that opens onto a meadow

Big Idea

Start with your state’s rules, a simple teaching style, and one learning space. This page is not legal advice. Laws change, and your state is the authority.

State laws

Homeschool requirements are different in every state. Read the public state-by-state pages at HSLDA, then confirm the details with your own state. Notice what you must file, what subjects you must cover, and what records you must keep. JJRave does not file those papers for you.

Choosing a style

  • One main program for math and reading, if you want a clear path.
  • These free habit lessons beside it, one section at a time.
  • Short lessons and more play for ages 4–6. Longer blocks for ages 10–13. See the sample schedules.

A learning space

  • A table by a window, with the supplies for today in one basket.
  • A quiet corner for reading.
  • Water in reach, and room to stand up and move.
  • A shade plan for outdoor time. Use Sun and Skin.

The space can be the kitchen table. It does not need to be a separate classroom.

Try it!

Parents: open your state’s page on HSLDA, write down one requirement you must meet, and clear one table for tomorrow’s lesson.

Quick check

  1. Where will you confirm your state’s rule?
  2. What is your main program, and which JJRave section comes first?
  3. Where will the child sit, move, and drink water?
