Life Is a Turtle's Race

A cute pastel turtle walking slowly and steadily through a flower meadow at sunrise

Big Idea

A turtle's race is not about beating anyone. It is about learning from mistakes, turning a new way when something isn't working, growing a little every day, and racing only your own yesterday.

Story time

One sunny morning, Lily and Owen watched a turtle crossing the meadow. It walked slowly. When it bumped into a big rock, it did not stop or give up. It turned a little and found a new way around. Step by step, it kept going.

“That turtle isn't racing anybody,” Owen said. “It's just getting a little farther each step.” Lily nodded. “Yesterday I couldn't tie my shoes by myself. Today I almost can. That's my turtle's race!”

Owen remembered his block tower that fell down. “I could build it wider at the bottom this time,” he said. That was his brave pivot. They both felt proud, not because they beat anyone, but because they each grew a little.

Four turtle steps

  1. Learn from mistakes. A mistake is a clue, not a failure. Ask, “What did this teach me?”
  2. Pivot fast, without shame. If something isn't working, it's brave to turn and try a new way. Changing your plan is smart, not silly.
  3. Grow steadily. Little steps every day add up, just like a turtle's steps cross a whole meadow.
  4. Race only your own yesterday. Don't compare yourself to other people. Ask, “Did I grow a little since yesterday?”

Sing it: “The Turtle's Race Song”

An original song. Sing it to any slow, happy tune, and take a turtle step on each line.

Chorus

Slow and steady, step by step,
I'm braver than I was before.
I only race my yesterday,
and every day I grow some more!

Verse 1 (Learning from mistakes)

I spilled the paint, I missed the line,
I took a breath and said, “That's fine.”
A mistake is just a clue
that shows me something new to do.

Chorus

Slow and steady, step by step,
I'm braver than I was before.
I only race my yesterday,
and every day I grow some more!

Verse 2 (Pivoting fast, no shame)

When one path's blocked, I turn around,
a brand-new way is to be found.
No shame, no frown, I try again,
a brave pivot now and then.

Chorus

Slow and steady, step by step,
I'm braver than I was before.
I only race my yesterday,
and every day I grow some more!

Verse 3 (Growing steadily)

A seed won't grow in just one day,
it grows with sun and rain and play.
I practice some, then some once more,
and I grow stronger than before.

Chorus

Slow and steady, step by step,
I'm braver than I was before.
I only race my yesterday,
and every day I grow some more!

Verse 4 (Racing only my yesterday)

I don't need to beat a friend,
there's no first place, there's no end.
I check the me of yesterday
and cheer, “I grew a bit today!”

Chorus

Slow and steady, step by step,
I'm braver than I was before.
I only race my yesterday,
and every day I grow some more!

Try it!

Think of one thing that didn't go the way you hoped this week. Fill in one row of the My Brave Pivot chart: what you tried, what happened, what you learned, and your brave pivot. Then circle how you grew since yesterday.

Quick check

  1. Who is the only person you race in a turtle's race?
  2. What is a “brave pivot”?
  3. What can a mistake teach you?
  4. What is one small step you can take today?
